What this covers#
Plain English: this is about money you pay MiTax for the service, not the tax you pay the government through MiTax.
MiTax charges you in a few ways: a subscription if you choose a paid plan, a small transaction fee when we route a payment for you, and commissions on ancillary services such as Tax Clearance Certificate processing and advisor bookings. This policy explains what can be cancelled and refunded across each of those. It sits under the Terms of Service; where the two ever differ, the Terms control.
The single most important thing to understand is our money model: MiTax never holds your funds. Tax money moves directly from you to the government through a licensed payment provider. That shapes everything below.
Subscriptions#
Plain English: paid plans are billed in advance. There is a free tier, so you can try before you pay.
MiTax offers a free tier and paid plans (Personal, Business, and Corporate) billed monthly or annually in advance. Current prices are on the pricing page. Because a free tier lets you test the calculation engine before paying, paid subscriptions are sold as a continuing service rather than a one-off purchase.
Completed billing periods are non-refundable, with the fairness exception in section 04. Annual plans are billed for the full year up front; if you cancel mid-year, cancellation takes effect at the end of the paid term unless you ask us to apply the section 04 pro-rata exception.
How to cancel#
Plain English: cancel any time in the app, or email us. Cancelling stops future billing.
You can cancel a subscription at any time from your account settings in the app, or by emailing support@mitax.io from your registered address. Cancellation stops the next renewal. You keep access to your paid features until the end of the current billing period, then the account moves to the free tier.
Your records do not disappear when you cancel. You can export your filings and documents from the data vault, as described in the Terms. We retain tax records for the period Nigerian law requires.
When we refund#
Plain English: we refund the unused part of your current month on request, plus genuine billing errors and duplicate charges.
We refund subscription fees in these situations:
- Unused portion on cancellation. When you cancel, you can ask us to refund the unused portion of your current billing month. This mirrors the commitment in our Terms of Service.
- Billing errors. If you were charged the wrong amount, charged after cancelling, or charged for a plan you did not select, we refund the difference in full.
- Duplicate charges. If the same subscription was charged twice for the same period, we refund the duplicate.
- Service failure. If a defect on our side made a paid feature unusable for a material part of the period and we could not fix it in reasonable time, we refund fairly for the affected period.
Requests should reach us within 30 days of the charge. This policy does not limit any non-excludable right you have under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act.
Transaction fees#
Plain English: the small fee for routing a payment is earned once the payment goes through. If the payment fails, there is no fee to refund.
When MiTax routes a tax or service payment for you, it earns a transaction fee, shown to you before you confirm. The fee is charged only on a successful payment, so a failed payment carries no fee. If a completed payment is later reversed because of a genuine MiTax error, the associated fee is refunded with it. Fees on payments that settled correctly to the government are not refundable, because the work of routing was done.
Government payments#
Plain English: once tax money reaches the government, MiTax cannot pull it back, because MiTax never held it. Refunds of tax come from the tax authority.
Tax you pay through MiTax goes straight from your bank or card to the government account through a licensed payment provider. MiTax does not hold, pool, or control that money at any point.
Because of this non-custodial design, MiTax cannot reverse a tax payment once it has settled. If you overpaid tax, paid the wrong tax type, or believe a government charge was in error, the refund must be sought from the relevant authority, the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) or your State Internal Revenue Service, under their refund process. We will help you assemble the receipt and records you need to make that claim, but the decision and the money sit with the authority.
Advisory & TCC services#
Plain English: commissions on advisor bookings and TCC processing are disclosed before you engage the service, and are refundable only if the service was not delivered.
For advisor bookings and Tax Clearance Certificate processing, the commission MiTax earns is disclosed before you engage the service. Once a session has been delivered or a request has been lodged with the authority, that commission is generally non-refundable, because the service was performed. If a booked session did not take place through no fault of yours, or a request was never lodged, we refund the commission. Fees charged directly by an independent advisor are governed by that advisor’s own terms.
Failed & duplicate payments#
Plain English: if money left your account but the payment failed, it comes back automatically through the payment provider.
Payments are processed by our licensed providers, Paystack and Flutterwave. If a payment is debited but fails or is not completed, the provider reverses it to your funding source under their standard timelines, typically within a few business days. If a reversal is late, contact support@mitax.io with the date, amount, and reference, and we will trace it with the provider.
How refunds are paid#
Plain English: back to the way you paid, usually within a few business days.
Approved refunds are returned to the original payment method through the payment provider. Timing depends on the provider and your bank, and is usually a few business days after approval. We do not refund to a different account from the one used to pay, for fraud-prevention reasons. Refunds are made in Nigerian Naira.
Request a refund#
Plain English: email support with your details and we will sort it.
To request a refund or cancellation, email support@mitax.io from your registered email with the charge date, amount, and payment reference. We aim to acknowledge within one business day and resolve eligible requests promptly. If you are unhappy with the outcome, you can escalate through our complaints process.
